Travel soccer updates for Fall 2013

Evaluations for Fall 2013 U11-U14 teams

Almost every player who is registered for Fall travel soccer has been evaluated. If your child is entering 8th grade in the fall and has played on a Weston Soccer travel team in the past, a separate evaluation isn’t necessary.

For all other players, the final chance to get an evaluation for the fall is this Friday, June 12.
  • Players currently in 6th grade, as well as any 7th graders who are new to Weston Soccer, should attend the U14 practice with Coach Bruno from 3-4:30pm on field 1 at MFP.
  • Players currently in 4th or 5th grade should come to the same practice from 3:30-4:30, where either Coach Bruno or Coach Matt will be available to conduct an evaluation.
If any player does not get a current evaluation this season, out of fairness to other players, he or she would not be eligible for placement on any A team that might be formed for the fall.

Current plans for Fall 2013 travel teams

Over the past several years, the club has moved strongly away from the practice of  “cutting” players from travel teams.  We want to support as many players as possible in their pursuit of soccer within the town of Weston; at the same time, we need to continually re-evaluate how we accomplish that goal, so that we can meet the needs of all of our players to the greatest extent possible.

At our most recent Board meeting on June 3, members of the Board (who represent a wide range of age groups within the club) agreed on these principles:

1. That we would continue to strive to create two teams at U11, which would be formed according to skill level into A and B teams. The U11 year is the first year after our Development Academy, and the goal is to allow further development of our players in their final year of 8v8 soccer. Creating A and B teams allows players to progress at the rate that best suits them. This is the policy that has been followed for several years. One change that will be implemented in Fall 2013, now that the club is moving to 3 practices/week for U11 and older teams, is to have both U11 teams practice together once each week.

2. That we will prioritize formation of U14 teams in the older age groups.
  • What does this mean? It means that when the pool of 8th graders is smaller than would normally be necessary for a team (13-18 players), we’ll look at younger players who are capable of playing at the U14 level in order to form a U14 team unless the number of 8th graders is just too small.
  • Why is this policy being implemented? We feel that players who have committed themselves over the years to playing in Weston deserve to have a team for their final year of travel soccer before entering high school, whether or not they intend to play high school soccer.

3. That at the U12 and U13 age levels, teams will be formed by looking at birth dates and skill levels, and not simply grade.  The twin policies of supporting players at U11 and U14  (which benefit all players) means that some flexibility is needed at the U12 and U13 age levels. We won’t always have perfect numbers of players in any given grade. Moreover, we have to follow CJSA rules regarding birth dates in order to get rosters approved for play. Two general policies will be followed:
  • Players will be grouped by birth date into the appropriate age group first; evaluations will then be reviewed to determine the best placement for that player.
  • Every effort will be made to ensure that players are grouped with several others in their school grade and to avoid having just one or two players in a grade on a particular roster, even if that means playing them in a higher age group than their actual birth date would indicate.

4. That we will require commitments from all families, including players trying out for premier teams, by July 1.  We support the right of all families to pursue the path best suited for their children. However, in order to form rosters that make the most sense for our players’ development, we need to know the pool of players available for those rosters. We don’t want to place players on a particular roster and then have to make changes down the road. We are therefore requiring all families to notify us by July 1 if their children will not be playing Weston travel in the fall; after July 1, no refunds will be given if children withdraw. Likewise, all players must be paid up by July 1 in order to be placed on a roster, unless appropriate arrangements have been made with Chris Myers. Our travel rosters will be announced around July 8.
